Unreal Code Camp

Jul. 05, 2017 | by Darwin Del Rosario | Category: Blog Post

Last June 17, 2017 – Unreal Code Camp held at Bitspace Makati has been successfully accomplished through the help of our ever supporting DevConPH Volunteers and in partnership with International Game Developers Association (IGDA) Manila.

Unreal Code Camp for Games is a whole day seminar and workshop for developers that aims to build up game development skills using Unreal Engine. Participants are a combination of students and professionals.

Starting the event is a welcome speech from our volunteer lead, Beatriz Rivera, with the usual announcement of upcoming sets of events and seminars.

Followed by Regina Supapo from IGDA Manila. She introduces what’s IGDA is and what they are doing. So to have some info, they are a chapter of an international non-profit professional society that is committed to advancing the careers and enhancing the lives of game developers by connecting members with their peers, promoting professional development, and advocating on issues that affect the developer community. IGDA Manila is specifically oriented towards cultivating a thriving local game development community in order to make the Philippines the new regional hub for game development in Southeast Asia.

After that, the workshop proper started. We are very thrilled with the presence of Mr. Bien Cabungcal and Mr. Luigi Rafael Bairan from Secret 6 Inc. Their company provides game development services for iOS, Android, Flash, HTML5, and Unity platforms. With the first locally developed esports title, Project Xandata, Secret 6 joins the first ever Esports Business Conference in Manila.

Mr. Cabungcal started by explaining what Unreal Engine is and he also shows some games that are developed using Unreal Engine to inspire the attendees.

Unreal Engine is a complete suite of creation tools designed to meet ambitious artistic visions while flexible enough to ensure success for teams of all sizes. As an established, industry-leading engine, Unreal delivers powerful, proven performance that you can trust.

After the short introduction, Mr. Bairan started the live game development. We had the projector to show what Mr. Bairan is doing and at the same time, he also discuss every step that he does.

No one will left behind, because while the other speaker is doing the live demo, the other one is roaming around to help those who are having problems or questions.

And of course, all code camps have this mini-hackathon at the end of the program. The participants are task to create a game that shoots a two-way projectile (left and right) then ends when it has shot five targets. The mini-hackathon lasted for about less than an hour and we have concluded 3 persons who finished the given task correctly on time.

The event was indeed so helpful not only to the participants but also to the volunteer squad. Aside from its all free to attend the event, including the foods and some giveaway prizes, we are able to unite different people from different places. No matter if they are on the professional level or just a student. We are all there to listen and learn new things. And we hope to see these new faces on our next event and seminars!

To the participants, speakers, partners, and to our volunteer squads, thanks for spending your time with us! Kudos everyone!
