Bluemix Challenge: #Apps4SocialGood Edition is a competition that aims to engage students in app development as they solve real-world challenges using Bluemix. For the #Apps4SocialGood Edition, the objective is to develop an app that solves a social good theme to be announced at the Bluemix workshop participants to learn how to use Bluemix.

Top 3 winning teams get over P120,000 worth of prizes such as Sodexo vouchers, medals, jackets, premium gadgets! 1st Place will get P60,000, 2nd Place will get P40,000 and 3rd Place will get P20,000.

Bluemix Workshop
& Theme Announcement

This is a FREE required afternoon workshop where teams will learn how to integrate Bluemix into their applications. Certificates of Attendance will be provided. Lunch and snacks will be provided.

Mentors Consultation

Teams will be assigned mentors to fully polish their prototypes for more chances of winning in the competition. Lunch will be provided.

Pitching & Awarding

Top teams will pitch & demo their final application. The winning teams will be selected and announced. 1st Place will get P60,000, 2nd Place will get P40,000 and 3rd Place will get P20,000 worth of prizes. Lunch and snacks will be provided.

Rules

What to expect?

  • Open to all currently enrolled college students and faculty members.
  • All qualified teams will get a Bluemix Challenge t-shirt.
  • All teams must register before December 7 with their team details.
  • Teams must develop an app that solves a social good theme to be announced at the Bluemix workshop.
  • The Bluemix workshop will be a FREE required workshop for participants to learn how to use Bluemix.
  • The Top 3 winning teams get over P120,000 worth of prizes including Sodexo vouchers, medals, jackets, premium gadgets! 1st Place will get P60,000, 2nd Place will get P40,000 and 3rd Place will get P20,000.
  • There will be showers of cool goodies at Pitching & Awarding Day. Be prepared for some fun gigs and quizzes during these events!

Registration & Team Size

  • Only registered teams online will be allowed to compete. Participants must register as a team and each group must be composed of 3 enrolled students and 1 faculty member (optional).
  • A teacher/faculty is recommended in a team. But if none is available, please provide a letter of acknowledgement from a teacher that they are informed you are attending the competition. 

Equipments

  • Participants are responsible for their own equipment, including computers, chargers and tools needed to make their app.

Platform and Technology Stacks

  • Teams may developer for any platforms such as but not limited to web, mobile, IoT, etc.
  • Teams may use any programming language, libraries or frameworks of preference.
  • The only technical requirement is that the app should use at least one (1) Bluemix Watson service.

New & Existing Solutions

  • Solutions may be newly created or pre-existing. If submitting an existing solution (developed prior to this competition), the solution must have integrated a Bluemix Watson service.

Pitching

  • The pitching will be on December 17 (Saturday) 10AM-3PM where the order of the teams will be draw lots.
  • Teams must be able to demo their prototype to the judges
  • Teams will be given 5 minutes to pitch & demo their app and 3 minutes for Q&A with the judges.

Judging Criteria 

Judges will give a score of 1 to 10 per criteria per team. 1 being unexceptional 10 exceptional. The judges’ decision is final.

Quality of App

40%

Includes how well the app was executed and the extent to which Bluemix Watson service(s) were utilized.

 

UI/UX

20%

Includes user experience, design, descriptive elements and cohesive workflow.

Ingenuity

20%

How original is the idea and approach in addressing the problem.

Usefulness

20%

How relevant and useful it is in the current situation.
