Bluemix Challenge is a competition that aims to engage students in app development as they solve real-world challenges using Bluemix technologies. For the ITIP Edition, the objective is to automate selected process of the ITIP National Conference.

Sep 14

Event Launch

All registered teams are invited to the launch to know more about the competition. Happening at Globe Corporate Showroom, 111 Valero St., Makati City at 4:30PM - 7PM.

Sep 19 - 24

Prototype Submission

Teams must submit screenshots of their prototype before the deadline. Teams may also submit a video of the prototype but is optional. Submit your prototypes via email to anthea@devcon.ph with the subject "Bluemix Challenge Prototype Submission - <team name>"

Bluemix Enablement
(Day 1)

This is a FREE afternoon workshop conducted by Dr. Alexis Pantola and Mr. Anton Orpilla where students will learn how to integrate Bluemix into their applications. Certificates of Attendance will be provided.

Pre-finals Round

Qualified teams will get an invitation to pitch and demo their app for the Pre-finals round. Top 6 teams finalist will each receive P10,000 worth of prizes! These teams will then level-up to the Finals Round.

Oct 15

Finals Round

Top teams will demo their final application. The winning teams will be selected and announced. 1st Place will get P50,000, 2nd Place will get P30,000 and 3rd Place will get P15,000 worth of prizes.

Nov 10 - 12

ITIP National Conference

The app of the winning team will be used in the conference proper which will undergo beta-testing after the Finals Competition.

Rules

What to expect?

  • Open to all currently enrolled college students and faculty members.
  • All qualified teams will get a Bluemix Olympics t-shirt plus 50% discount vouchers for DevCon Summit 2016 #DevFutureForward, the Biggest Developer Conference in the Philippines.
  • All teams must register before September 14 with their team details.
  • The competition has two rounds: Pre-Final Round set on October 1 (Saturday) and Finals Round on October 15 (Saturday).
  • Teams are to develop an app that will be used in the ITIP National Conference. Winning teams will be selected based on the implementation of the app features required.
  • In the Pre-Finals Round, Top 6 teams will each receive P10,000 worth of team prizes including P8,000 Sodexo vouchers, DevCon shirt and more freebies. These teams will then level-up to the Finals Round.
  • In the Finals Round, the Top 3 winning teams get over P90,000 worth of Sodexo vouchers, medals, jackets, premium gadgets! 1st Place will get P50,000, 2nd Place will get P30,000 and 3rd Place will get P15,000.
  • There will be showers of cool goodies a the Pre-finals and Finals Round. Be prepared for some fun gigs and quizzes during these events!

Competition Rules

Registration & Team Size

  • Only registered teams online will be allowed to compete. Participants must register as a team and each group must be composed of 3 enrolled students and 1 faculty member (optional).
  • A teacher/faculty is recommended in a team. But if none is available, please provide a letter of acknowledgement from a teacher that they are informed you are attending the competition. 

Procedure

  • To qualify for Pre-finals Round, teams must develop a protype of the 3 required features which are Registration, Agenda and Session Time Tracking. Then teams must submit screenshots of their prototype before September 19, 2016 (Monday). Teams may also submit a video of the prototype but is optional.
  • Qualified teams will get invitation to pitch and demo their app for the Pre-finals round on September 24 at IBM Philippines Office, Bonifacio Global City.
  • Top 6 teams finalist will each receive P10,000 worth of prizes including P8,000 Sodexo vouchers, DevCon shirt and more freebies. These teams will then level-up to the Finals Round.
  • To qualify for the Finals Round, teams must integrate in their app the 4th module which will be announced during the Pre-finals Round.
  • Finalists will then be invited to pitch and demo their final product on October 1 at IBM Philippines Office, Bonifacio Global City.
  • In the Finals Round, the Top 3 winning teams get over P90,000 worth of Sodexo vouchers, medals, jackets, premium gadgets! 1st Place will get P50,000, 2nd Place will get P30,000 and 3rd Place will get P15,000.

Equipment
Participants are responsible for their own equipment, including computers, chargers and tools needed to make their app. 

Platform and Technology Stacks

  • Teams must develop a web app. 
  • You may use any programming language, libraries or frameworks you prefer.
  • The only tool requirement is to use one or more Bluemix services. 

New & Existing Solutions 
Solutions may be newly created or pre-existing. If submitting an existing solution (developed prior to this competition), the solution must have integrated a Bluemix service.

Pre-fInals Round
Teams will be given 3 minutes to demo their applications and 2 minutes for Q&A. The top 6 finalists will be given a chance to level-up at the Finals Round. Teams will also be assigned a mentor to further improve their applications.

Finals Round
Teams will be given 5 minutes to demo their applications and 2 minutes for Q&A. The top 3 winning teams will receive cool and awesome prizes!

 

Judging Criteria 

Judges will give a score of 1 to 10 per criteria per team. 1 being unexceptional 10 exceptional. The judges’ decision is final.

Design and User Experience

40%

Includes user experience, design, descriptive elements and cohesive workflow.

Implementation

30%

Includes how well the app was executed and the extent to which Bluemix service(s) were utilized.

Completeness of the Solution

30%

Includes the extent to which the solution is relevant, complete, and functioning.

Intellectual Property Rights

All teams retain full ownership of what they have created for the competition. By submitting a solution to the challenge, you do not transfer any intellectual property rights to the organizers. The organizers has the right to use the app for ITIP National Conference and future related events. The organizer will have the right to feature all solutions entered in the competition for promotional purposes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can participate?
Participants should be college students who are currently enrolled in an educational institution with 1 faculty/teacher in the team.

Where is the venue?

The Pre-finals Round and Finals Round will be at the IBM Office in Bonifacio Global City. 

What will be provided by the organizers during the Pre-finals and Finals Round?
Food/drinks, Power outlets, ables/chairs, internet access. External monitors, chargers, etc. will not be provided.

What should I bring for the event?
Laptop and chargers. Tools that you need to develop your app and extension cord. 

What should I wear?
It's highly recommended that you wear comfortable but presentable clothing. Shorts and slippers will NOT be allowed in the building. Don't forget to bring a jacket. 

Can I just be a spectator?
Unfortunately, spectators won’t be allowed. Why be a spectator when it’s more fun to participate?

Do I need to pay any money to register for the Hackathon?
No. Competition is FREE! You’ll even get 50% discount voucher for DevCon Summit 2016 #DevFutureForward! Free access to Bluemix is available for the first 30 days and a paid subscription will not have a bearing on the chances to win.

What else will you do with my submission?
The organizers has the right to use the app for ITIP National Conference and future related events. The organizers will have the right to publicly display your submission on the challenge website. They will also be allowed to publicize your name on the challenge website in connection with the submission and the challenge during the competition and after its conclusion.
